What drew you to your home and property when seeing it for the first time? 

Twenty years ago, we were walking through the small town of Occidental when we came across a poster in a store advertising the sale of our home in Jenner. The hand printed advertisement caught our attention when we read “own your own music studio in the south of Provence, blocks away from the beach.” We wrote down the number and called the next day to set up an appointment to look at the property.

 After seeing the home, we immediately fell in love with the fabulous views of the coastal hills, proximity to the ocean and the quaint village of Jenner. Walking past the chained gate at the end of our street took us through a lush forest accompanied by the sounds of a waterfall and stream below.

The home was built in 1911 and was a former loggers’ bunkhouse which had been upgraded into a single-family residence over the years. We loved the original features, including the wood floors and towering hills that protect us from the strong coastal winds on the other side of town. We envisioned a unique and warm environment to entertain friends and family.  The double lot and land extending to the creek offered us an opportunity to create a spacious garden and garage/artist studio. We also saw the potential for a vacation rental, and in fact have operated one with great success over the past ten years.

 

What do you love about your home now that you have made it your own? 

 We never tire of standing on the balcony and looking at the valley and hillside views.  The stars and sky are very dramatic at night and we also enjoy the winter storms while sitting next to the wood stoves.  There are three distinct living areas in the home, so one can have privacy when desired. We have lovingly restored the interior and have created a space that is eclectic and yet respectful of the home’s long history. We have carefully chosen high quality fixtures and materials that are interesting and evocative of the history of the property.

It is also gratifying to be able to offer the home to guests across the globe, and reading their positive reviews on line and in our guestbook. Many artists and musicians have chosen to rent it as it is quiet, offers space for creative endeavors and is a romantic and relaxing getaway. We also enjoy the proximity to nature, the Russian River and ocean with glorious hiking trails and newly established restaurants and wineries in the area. In addition, we find that the Jenner community is a caring steward of our little village.

 

How would you describe your home’s best features in which a buyer might miss if not informed by the marketing?

The fact that it is a year around retreat with attractions that can keep the new owners busy the entire year. Hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, beach combing, the opportunity to play golf on two nearby courses are activities we and our guests enjoy.  The Sonoma Coast wineries are very accessible and our proximity to Hwy 1 and River Road makes it easy to visit our favorite towns like Healdsburg and Bodega Bay.

The care that we have put into our renovations and in the formal garden space below the property. A solid returning guest client base that the new owners can enjoy from our 10 year operation as a vacation rental that is completely turnkey.

Our proximity to the Jenner Headlands. Sonoma Land Trust’s recent purchase of 5200 protected coastal mountain acres offers some of the most breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the town of Jenner. This will no doubt enhance Jenner’s property values as well as its reputation as a world class destination for nature lovers.

 

What do your friends and family love about your home?  Be specific... 

They love our beautiful Magnolia tree, valley views, birds, deer, gardens, the peace and quiet, the comfortable furnishings, grand piano, large living spaces, country kitchen and the peaceful artistic town of Jenner. They also love the close proximity to Cafe Acquatica, River’s End Restaurant the Russian River and the seals at the mouth of the river and Pacific Ocean. Views, views… and did I mention views! 

The formal garden and all of its inhabitants, butterflies, honeybees, hummingbirds and rabbits as well the many outdoor areas to enjoy a cup of tea or a glass of wine. 

The three luxuriously appointed bathrooms, unique layout of the home and our custom tiled laundry room. 

The fact that both bedrooms each have separate entranceways and private decks, wood stoves, en suite bathrooms, living room and sitting room. Perfect for two couples or families. Privacy for everyone. 

 

Tell us about any renovations completed during the past several years that you are most proud to share with friends and the buyers?  Go ahead… and brag a little!

  1. The tile work throughout the house.  We used handmade McIntyre tiles for the bathrooms, the kitchen and the tile supports for all three wood stoves. 
  2. The hot tub deck and hot tub. Very private and conveniently located outside the master bedroom.
  3. The great room with comfortable daybeds overlooking the valley and Russian River.
  4. Our new concrete patio and Magnolia tree planter box.
  5. Attractive and serviceable laundry room.
  6. We designed and built the formal garden that we have lovingly maintained for over twenty years.

 

What projects or renovations did you consider earlier in your ownership that you have not completed and/or that have had less appeal with time? 

  1. Connecting both levels of our two-tiered home via an interior staircase
  2. We had an architect draw up plans to raise the ceiling and build another floor and dormer with a view of the ocean.
  3. Finishing the basement and wine cellar.
  4. Creation of covered garage in driveway with granny unit.
  5. Build an extension of the formal garden with an artist studio on undeveloped part of property next to our garden.

  

Why live in your neighborhood?  What do you want a potential buyer to know about the area, your neighborhood specifically or your community as a whole?

A caring active community dedicated to the improvement of the town of Jenner.  Friendly people, visitors from across the globe, a wide spectrum of recreational activities, upcoming wineries, farm to table restaurants, and local entertainment.

 

What have been some of your concerns while living in your home? Space, renovations, privacy, etc?

Since we have moved to Los Angeles, it has been increasingly difficult to both enjoy the property on a regular basis as well as not being able to address maintenance issues in a timely manner.

 

What will you miss most not living in your home? 

Appreciating the natural beauty of our surroundings that we have shared with friends and family over the years, along with the fun and challenge of renovating and outfitting a historic home with the treasures we have found along the way.

Perched on a bluff high above where the Russian River meets the sea, the coastal village of Jenner (pop. 136) offers stunning vistas, spectacular sunsets, and a chance to connect with nature along the Sonoma County coast. Each spring the competition between the ocean waves and the river's flow creates a large sand spit at the mouth of the river, creating the Russian River Estuary, home to Pacific harbor seals, brown pelicans, ospreys, great blue herons, and other wildlife.

Located on the northern edge of the estuary, below the bluffs, the Sonoma Coast Visitors Center in Jenner provides interpretative displays and a nature store. Along the coast on the southern edge of the estuary, Goat Rock State Beach offers a scenic shoreline, an easily assessable sandy beach, and the chance to picnic or comb the beach for washed-up treasures.

There are several restaurants in town and scattered along the coast, many with spectacular views. There are two lodges in town — Jenner Inn provides a range of rooms and suites, as well as two vacation homes, and River's End Inn & Restaurant, overlooking the river and ocean, offers six cabins and a restaurant, for an off-the-grid romantic escape. Vacation rentals are also available in the area, and three other lodges are a short drive away along the coast.

Serene and quiet Jenner beckons to visitors looking to get away from the urban bustle in favor of connecting with the tranquility of nature. Known for its coastal beauty, this seaside town offers quite a few opportunities for adventure and recreation where the wonders of this area’s nature and history can be fully appreciated.
